The Macerata biogas plant was connected to the electricity grid in 2012 and was the second plant built by Viridis Energia in the world of energy production from organic biomass, with an environmental sustainability certificate.

The plant will see the completion of the revamping plan in 2021 in order to comply with further authorisation requirements, and the conversion to bio-methane is planned for 2024. The supply chain for the plant is based on agricultural crops and by-products of organic origin from local farms.
